About the Attorney
Claudia Hernández Gómez
ATTORNEY AT LAW
I am an attorney specializing in immigration law, deeply committed to advocating for my clients and ensuring their stories are heard.
My journey began at Miami Dade College, where I graduated summa cum laude with an Associate in Arts in Philosophy in 2015. I continued my education at Florida International University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy in 2017. At FIU, my research paper focused on the ethics behind street art, while my studies provided me with a rich understanding of ancient Greek and Hellenistic philosophy, as well as modern philosophy—particularly the works of Descartes, Locke, Hume, Berkeley, and Kant. The exploration of the Enlightenment (modern philosophy) was particularly transformative for me. This philosophical movement emphasized reason, liberty, and justice—principles that resonate deeply within the legal framework and have guided my professional aspirations.
In 2022, I graduated cum laude from St. Thomas University College of Law. My time at law school was pivotal in shaping my legal career. I actively volunteered with the Elder Law Society and the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), where I provided free tax services to low-income residents. These experiences not only reinforced my commitment to service but also enhanced my understanding of the legal challenges faced by underserved communities.
One of the most significant influences on my development as a lawyer came from my work in the Immigration Clinic under the mentorship of Professor Michael Vastine, a renowned figure in immigration law. His guidance was instrumental in my growth as a dedicated advocate. Through hands-on experience in the clinic, I gained practical insights into complex immigration issues, particularly in asylum defense, VAWA cases, and immigration defense for cases involving criminal offenses. Professor Vastine’s unwavering commitment to his clients and his emphasis on ethical practice inspired me to adopt a similar approach in my own work. This experience prepared me for the real-world challenges that lie ahead in immigration law. I learned the importance of empathy, diligence, and strategic thinking in advocating for those facing difficult circumstances. I realized that being a lawyer is not just about understanding the law; it’s about being a compassionate advocate for individuals navigating complex legal systems.
At Cardenas Law Firm I focus on asylum defense, VAWA cases, waivers for illegal presence and criminal issues, family reunification, and citizenship matters. My journey has instilled in me a profound dedication to my clients, and I am committed to helping them achieve their dreams in the face of adversity. Each case I handle is a reminder of why I chose this path—to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.
