1st Category = Unmarried children of citizens. 2A Category = Spouses and children under the age of 21 of legal residents. 2B Category = Unmarried children over the age of 21 of legal residents. 3rd Category = Married children of citizens. 4th Category = Brothers of citizens. The May 2015 Visa Bulletin was released this week by the U.S. Department of State. Visas to immigrate to the United States by preference are numerically limited by both category and country of assignment. The country of assignment is usually your country of birth. Most immigrants are requested or required under the sponsorship of a family member who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. In the image below is the list of the visa bulletin for claimed relatives, made by the Department of State and corresponding to the month of May 2015. The bulletin shows that there are delays in family categories. The visa bulletin indicates the dates and deadlines when people in a certain category have been waiting for visas. However, the waiting times for which they are currently applying are not indicated. U.S. citizens may sponsor their spouses, adult sons, sons and daughters, parents, and brothers and sisters. Permanent residents are limited to sponsoring spouses, children and children under the age of 21 and unmarried adult children. With the exception of spouses, minor children, and parents of U.S. citizens who are considered “immediate relatives,” all other categories of relatives are subject to a numerically limited system of preference.
